A smooth first session at home begins before you turn on the NeurOptimal® system. Confirm the rental terms, learn the handoff process, choose a comfortable place, and know whom to contact if something does not look right. This checklist helps you organize those steps without assuming that every provider supplies the same equipment or follows the same policies.
If you are renting from Freedom Neurofeedback Services, start with the current rental page. It states that rentals are picked up at the West Chester Township office and that a training session and support during the rental month are provided. Confirm the current details when you reserve because packages and policies can change.
Before pickup: confirm the practical details
Ask your provider to put the important terms in writing. Before pickup day, confirm:
- The pickup location, date, time, and name of the person meeting you
- The rental start and return dates
- What identification, agreement, or payment is required at pickup
- Which items are included in your specific rental
- Whether you need to supply headphones, earbuds, internet access, or anything else
- How sessions are counted for your package
- Who to contact for setup or technical questions
- What to do if you need to change the pickup or return appointment
Do not rely on a general product photo as an inventory list. Ask the provider to identify every item that should leave the office with you and every item that must be returned.
At pickup: complete the walkthrough
Use the provider’s orientation to practice the complete setup while help is available. The goal is not merely to watch someone else do it. Ask to repeat the steps yourself and pause whenever an instruction is unclear.
During the walkthrough:
- Match each item to the provider’s inventory.
- Ask how the parts should be connected and disconnected.
- Learn how to start and end a session correctly.
- Ask how to place and remove the sensors.
- Confirm how the audio should be connected and adjusted.
- Ask how the equipment should be stored between sessions.
- Write down the support contact and available support hours.
- Ask which problems you should stop and report instead of troubleshooting yourself.
Take your own notes unless the provider gives you a written guide. NeurOptimal also maintains official new-user resources, including a getting-started manual and short video tutorials. Use official materials and your provider’s instructions rather than third-party videos with unknown equipment or outdated software.
At home: choose a sensible setup area
Pick a place where the user can sit comfortably and the equipment can rest on a stable surface. Keep the setup away from spills, foot traffic, curious pets, and anything that could pull on a cable. Make sure the display is easy to see without balancing equipment on a lap or soft cushion.
Before you settle on the location, ask whether the system needs an internet connection for login, licensing, updates, or support. Do not assume that an internet connection is always required—or never required. Your provider should tell you what applies to the system you received.
If several household members may use the rental, choose one storage location and one routine for checking equipment in and out. That reduces the chance that a cable, sensor, or accessory is left in another room.
Before the first session: run a dry setup
Set up the system at a time when you are not rushed. Follow the provider’s sequence and stop if a connector does not fit easily, a component appears damaged, or an on-screen message does not match the walkthrough. Do not force a connection, open the equipment, install unrelated software, or attempt a repair unless the provider has instructed you to do so.
Then check the basics:
- The system is on a stable surface.
- Cables are arranged so no one will trip over or pull them.
- The user has a comfortable seat.
- The audio option approved by the provider is connected.
- The sensors and other rental items match the inventory.
- The support number or email is easy to find.
- You know how to end the session and store the equipment.
If you want more background before beginning, Freedom’s articles explain how Dynamical Neurofeedback® works and what it can be like to use neurofeedback at home.
During the session: keep the process simple
NeurOptimal’s current first-session guide describes sensors placed on the scalp and ears while the user listens to music. The sensors read activity; they do not send anything into the brain. Brief interruptions in the audio provide feedback. The official guide also says the user does not need to concentrate on a task or control the process.
Follow the exact placement and software instructions from your orientation. If the user is uncomfortable, an item will not stay in place, the audio is not working, or the system displays an unfamiliar message, pause and contact the provider. Avoid guessing at settings or using advice intended for a different system.
After each session: reset the area
Use the provider-approved method to end the session, remove the sensors, and care for each item. Ask before using cleaners, wipes, water, or other products on rental equipment. Store everything in the agreed location and check the inventory while the session is still fresh in your mind.
A short personal note can also be useful. Record the date, who used the system, whether the setup went smoothly, and any question you want to ask. Keep observations factual; a journal is not a diagnosis or a substitute for advice from a licensed health professional.
Before return: avoid last-minute surprises
Several days before the return date, review the agreement and confirm the appointment. Count the rental items against the pickup inventory. Ask the provider what to do with saved notes or account information and whether any sign-out or data-removal step is required.
If you want to extend the rental, ask before the current term ends. Do not assume that an extension, renewal, unused-session rollover, or the same package will be available.
A final two-minute check
Before your first home session, you should be able to answer five questions:
- Do I know the correct setup sequence?
- Do I know what came with this rental?
- Do I know how to start and end a session?
- Do I know how to store the equipment?
- Do I know whom to contact if I need help?
If any answer is no, contact the provider before continuing. Freedom also maintains a general FAQ page, and you can send a question directly about the current rental process.
